Stitches of the Soul / Las Puntadas del Alma is a quilt group that is supported by the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois. The group grew out of a workshop in 2008 and continues to meet weekly at the Museum with the coordination of Dolores Mercado, Associate Curator. The participants feed on the knowledge of each other’s experience and techniques in the past few years. They welcome and teach new participants, not only adults but have also taught school-age children.
Through story quilts, participants share their experiences regarding different subjects such as family celebrations, identity, daily live as well as stories of immigration, violence against women and slavery. This group has offered empowerment through various activities, topics, reunions, workshops and exhibitions.
